Following a positive response from Scarborough Library's Director, William Smettem, to his first letter. Stephen quickly followed this up with a letter elaborating on his proposals and discussing the financial situation.
Stephen Joseph had little money to finance the project and sought help wherever possible. William Smettem would later agree a much reduced rent which, given the season lost approximately £600, certainly helped Stephen's decision to run the theatre for a second year despite the season's losses.
