Researching Stephen Joseph: Scarborough Library

Second only to the Stephen Joseph Papers at the University Of Manchester for material relating to Stephen Joseph's work at the Library Theatre is The Stephen Joseph Theatre Collection at Scarborough Library.

This small but significant research archive pertains predominantly to the early years of the Library Theatre and notably holds a considerable amount of correspondence between Stephen Joseph and Scarborough Library relating to the foundation and running of the venue during its first decade.

Scarborough Library and Customer Services Centre holds a collection which includes but is not limited to:
  • A collection of original correspondence between Stephen Joseph and the directors of Scarborough Library.
  • Original theatre programmes - often in mint condition - from the first performance at the Library Theatre through to performances at the theatre's second home, the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round. This includes rarities such as programmes for the world premieres of early and notable plays by Alan Ayckbourn.
  • Collected newspaper articles published in the Scarborough Evening News from the first performance at the venue in 1955 to June 2011.
  • Collection of the annual In-The-Round Festival programmes, which began at the Library Theatre in 1960.
  • Photographs of the Library Theatre.
The collection is accessible during the times the library is open. There is no need to book an appointment to view these materials however advanced notification would ensure ready access.
